One of my criticisms of Barack Obama is the rejection of fundamental freedom and democracy that is central to his vision of U.S. conduct in the world. Obama is neither a fascist nor, essentially, a progressive and there is a lot against which we should be struggling in his world view. For example, his vision of security as it applies to data and information is as close to that of a police state as I've ever seen in this country.
But our friend David Lindorf of This Can't Be Happening writes a column today about what I believe to be Obama's greatest atrocity: the drone war. And he reprints a list from the amazing DronesWatch website of the kids -- people under 18 -- who have been verified as killed by drones. Who knows how many others have died without verification in these insane military attacks but this list is impressive enough.
Here is a list of the children of men and women, of the brothers and sisters of young people, of playmates, in some cases of boys or girls who have sparked those early feelings of attraction and love in others (the challenging magic of that period of our lives). These are people; they are kids. They died without even knowing they were about to, killed by a technology that comes as close as we have ever been to the Machine world of the Matrix that was created in a country of people who really aren't paying much attention.
It's time to start paying attention. Don't you think?
